A Narwhal's Niche
Narwhals live year round in the arctic. They eat squid, fish, shrimp, and crab. Narwhals use echolocation to find their food and protect themselves from approaching predators. Narwhals are hunted by Orca whales, polar bears, sharks and humans. Many narwhals are hunted by people for food and for their ivory tusks, or horns. There are communities in Norway that rely on narwhal meat, sinew, blubber, and tusk to survive. To protect themselves from their predators, narwhals hide in cracks formed in glaciers. This helps them hide from their main predators, Orca whales, because of their size. Narwhals are much smaller than Orca whales, so they can fit into small holes that orca whales can not. Orca whales also have a dorsal fin, which makes it harder to swim inside the glaciers to get the narwhals.
